Flexible. Scalable. Future-Proof.
Configure a single locomotive with multiple energy supply modules
ModuTrac™, which offers tremendous benefits for mining, also offers a compelling suite of advantages that translate seamlessly to urban rail and specialty purpose locomotive requirements
Modular Energy Supply
The standardized interface for energy supply modules allows for easy interchangeability between various power sources. This means a single locomotive can be configured with diesel-generators, lead-acid batteries, or advanced lithium-ion batteries, overhead catenary systems and also combinations of different energy supply modules. For urban environments, this flexibility supports transitioning to greener, emission-free energy forms as infrastructure develops, with minimal downtime for conversion. This future-proofs investments in locomotive fleets.
Enhanced Scalability & Reduced Upfront Costs
The modular approach addresses the historical disadvantage of high upfront capital expenditure (CAPEX) for rail infrastructure projects. Operators can begin with a smaller initial investment in vehicles and gradually expand their fleet as demand grows, without significant interference with ongoing operations. For specialty applications, this means custom solutions can be scaled from pilot projects to full deployment more efficiently.
High efficiency & low operating costs
ModuTrac™ powers Schalke’s proven traction technology delivering significant cost savings and operational reliability
Low Maintenance Traction Systems
High Availability
ModuTrac™ systems ensure high availability. Scheduled maintenance on the energy supply can be performed on spare energy supply modules without interrupting operation. Spare energy supply modules also readily reduce breakdown hazards through simple swapping resulting in minimal downtime for the locomotive. This high reliability is paramount for maintaining service in demanding mining, urban transit and critical specialty operations.
Energy Efficiency & Regenerative Braking
The combination of steel wheels on steel rails results in very low rolling resistance, contributing to low energy consumption. Modern locomotives from Schalke utilize their drive system as a wear-free service brake, converting braking energy back into electricity that can be fed into the grid or used to charge batteries. This significantly reduces wear on mechanical brakes, cutting operational expenditures (OPEX). For urban transit, this is a major benefit in terms of energy recovery and reduced brake wear in high-traffic environments.
